Post-traumatic stress disorder
Most people have heard of post-traumatic stress disorder, especially when reading about soldiers returning from war zones.
But few realise that post-traumatic stress disorder can happen to anyone, not just soldiers.
Post-traumatic stress disorder is basically a severe emotional reaction to an event which threatens your life. Therefore, surviving a major car crash, or a train, or plane crash, can lead anyone to suffer from the condition.
And post-traumatic stress disorder can also afflict those who witness a major traumatic event.
Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder include nightmares;
flashbacks; reliving the occurrence; guilt; not sleeping; unable to concentrate; lack of interest in everyday life; relationship difficulties; irritability; sweating/shakes; and, illness.
What makes post-traumatic stress disorder worse is the inability of many doctors to diagnose it properly, or for many, including the sufferers, to admit that it is exists as a medical condition.
But, because the whole subject of post-traumatic stress disorder is so wrapped up with emotive arguments, and is viewed by many as a medical grey area, it is worth getting serious professional help.
